Let’s get informed with these mental health facts and figures:

Every seven years a survey is done in England to measure the number of people who have different types of mental health problems. It was last published in 2016 and reported the following figures:

Generalised anxiety disorder: 5.9 in 100 people
Depression: 3.3 in 100 people
Phobias: 2.4 in 100 people
OCD: 1.3 in 100 people
Panic disorder: 0.6 in 100 people
Post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD): 4.4 in 100 people
Mixed anxiety and depression: 7.8 in 100 people

However for bipolar disorder, psychotic disorder and personality disorders are usually measured over a person’s lifetime, rather than each year but the following figures are:

Psychotic disorder: 0.7 in 100 people
Bipolar disorder: 2.0 in 100 people
Antisocial personality disorder: 3.3 in 100 people
Borderline personality disorder: 2.4 in 100 peopleMental-Health-event-image2

Overall facts and figures:

1) Mixed anxiety and depression has been estimated to cause one fifth of days lost from work in Britain.

2) 1 in 4 people will experience a mental health problem however, only 230 of every 300 people who need help will actually visit their GP.

3) 9 out of 10 people with mental health problems experience stigma and discrimination.

4) Mental and substance use disorders are the leading cause of disability worldwide.

5) Over 800,000 people die due to suicide every year and suicide is the second leading cause of death in 15-29-year-olds. There are indications that for each adult who died of suicide there may have been more than 20 others attempting suicide.

Children and young people, mental health facts:

1) Around 20% of the world’s children and adolescents have mental disorders or problems.

2) About half of mental disorders begin before the age of 14.

3) 1 in 10 young people will experience a mental health problem and nearly 3 in 4 of those young people fear the reactions of friends when they talk about their mental health problem/s.

4) Girls are far more likely to self-harm than boys. In the UK, between one in 12 and one in 15 young people self-harm.

5) 70% of young people who experience a mental health problem do not receive the appropriate support.

6) One in six young people will experience an anxiety-related problem.

7) Depression is a common mental disorder that affects nearly 80,000 children and young people.GFMen and mental health facts:

1) For men under 35 suicide is the biggest cause of death.

2) 78% of suicides are male.

3) 12.5% of men in the UK are suffering from one of the common mental health disorders.

4) Men are nearly three times more likely than women to become alcohol dependent (8.7% of men are alcohol dependent compared to 3.3% of women).

5) Men commit 86% of violent crime and are twice as likely to be victims of violent crime.

6) 73% of adults who ‘go missing’ are men and 87% of rough sleepers are male.

7). Men are three times as likely to report frequent drug use than women (4.2% and 1.4% respectively) and more than two-thirds of drug-related deaths occur in men.


Women and mental health facts:

1) Depression, anxiety, psychological distress, sexual violence, domestic violence and rising rates of substance use affect women to a greater extent than men across different countries and different settings.

2) Two thirds of those with dementia are women. As age increases, so does the risk of dementia and because women have a higher life expectancy compared with men, they are more likely to have it.

3) Women are twice as like to experience a type of anxiety disorder.

4) It’s estimated that around 60% of those who have obsessive compulsive disorder or a phobia are women.

5) Women (particularly younger women) are more likely to develop an eating disorder in comparison to men  1.9% of women and only 0.2% of men develop anorexia.

6) 8% to 15% of women will experience postnatal depression after giving birth.

7) 1 in 4 women will seek treatment for depression at any one time.
